Product description

One night in 1941, fifteen-year-old Lina, her mother and young brother are hauled from their home by Soviet guards, thrown into cattle cars and taken away. They are being deported to Siberia. An unimaginable and harrowing journey has begun… Lina doesn’t know if she’ll ever see her father or her friends again. But she refuses to give up hope. For her family. For her country. For her future. And for love – first love with a boy she barely knows, but knows she does not want to lose. Is hope enough to keep Lina alive? Written by the daughter of a Lithuanian refugee, this is a haunting novel based on true events, drawing on family history and memories of exiled survivors.

    Hearbreaking but hopeful

At first I found the text a little difficult to understand, but once I got deeper into it, I found myself questioning different characters reactions and the way they behaved. Some parts of the book are heartbreaking, but other parts become hopeful. Ruta Sepetys keeps her writing very realistic and gives us an insight into the lives led by the people who were captured and forced to work against their will.

    Amazing!

Between Shades of Gray is amazing! It was a book that was impossible to put down. It kept me wondering how Lina would cope and what would happen to her, her friends and her family. It was a very touching story.
