Our pick this month for children aged 5-7 is We Sang Across the Sea by the award-winning and very well-loved poet Benjamin Zephaniah. This is a brand new poem all about the hopes, dreams and bravery of the Windrush generation. It is told through the real-life experiences of the Trinidadian musician, Mona Baptiste, who boarded The Empire Windrush in the hopes of becoming a singer and making a better life for herself.

The poem is accompanied by brilliantly colourful illustrations throughout, allowing Mona’s story and Benjamin Zephaniah’s words to come to life. Whether in the classroom or at home, We Sang Across the Sea is perfect for young readers to learn about the very important topic of the Windrush generation.
