Product description

Penelope Treadwell is the feisty thirteen-year-old heiress of the bestselling magazine, The Penny Dreadful. Her masterly tales of the macabre are gripping Victorian Britain, even though no one knows she’s the real author. Then she receives a disturbing letter from the governor of the notorious Bedlam madhouse. Every night, at twelve minutes to midnight, the inmates are rising from their beds, scribbling strange words on scraps of paper, cell walls, their own skin. Always on the lookout for sinister stories, Penny is intrigued. But as she investigates, her fictional adventures are about to turn into terrifying real ones. With each tick of the clock, chaos is coming closer…

This is a fabulous thriller set in Victorian London. It is a sinister story told in vivid language and is based in Bedlam, the famous lunatic asylum. Strange writings are being revealed there which set off an intriguing mystery that the heroine Penelope Treadwell tries to solve. I found this book enthralling; it was so good I couldn’t put it down. The author uses such descriptive language that you easily imagine it in your head. I recommend this book to anyone over the age of 10 who likes mystery and suspense.
