on 16 March 2016David Walliams creates a magically believable world in Gangsta Granny, a fantastic story that can be read a million times without becoming bored by anyone with stunning illustrations by Tony Ross.
Every Friday night, twelve year old Ben is dumped at his tediously dull grandmother’s house for the night, whilst his dance mad parents go on a ‘date night’ to see Strictly Stars Live On Stage. One night though, Ben just can’t stand the cabbage soup and Scrabble after tea any longer and creeps downstairs to phone his parents. What he doesn’t know though is that his grandmother is listening to every whine and grumble he makes about her.
After this Granny forms a plan to make Ben think that she is an international jewel thief, she tells him all sorts of stories about being a thief, and soon Ben is mixed up in her world.
The main parts of this story tell of how Ben and his Gangsta Granny steal the Crown Jewels. Some of my favourite aspects of the book include lists, for example in Chapter 8: A Small Wig In A Jar, there is an imaginative and amusing list of the items Ben’s mum has acquired through her love of the famous ballroom dancer, Flavio Flavioli.

on 22 February 2016This book is excellent. My dad read this book to me and i really looked foward to hearing what was going to happen.
i love the part where they go to steal the crown jewels because Ben thought his nan was a Gangsta…. when they get into the tower of London. there are surprised when they hear the Queen of England asking them why are they here.

on 6 January 2015I absolutely love this book because its about a granny and her grandson who try to steal the crown jewels
Whilst Ben’s mum and dad go to watch their favourite TV programme Strictly Stars Dancing on a Friday night Ben has to go to his boring granny house; eat cabbage related dishes, play scrabble.
After Granny and Ben try and steal the crown jewels and met the queen granny made an announcement to Ben and said that she had cancer and didn’t have long left to live. When she died Ben said that she wasn’t his boring old granny she was his gangsta granny!

on 15 April 2014I have to be honest, David Walliams is one of my favourite authors of all times, followed by Enid Blyton but Gangsta Granny must be one of them most hilarious children’s books in history, whilst reading this book I couldn’t stop myself from laughing. You have done a fantastic job writing this book David, well done!! :) Carry on writing more books!

on 8 March 2014I like this book it is quite sad at the end but who cares I like books with happy endings OK but I also like ones with sad ones there just wouldn’t be one without the other y’know? If there wasn’t one you would know what was going to happen and it would be boring so anyway sorry for spoiling it but this one has a sad ending.

on 4 March 2014Gangsta granny is the best book I’ve ever read!! It’s about a boy called Ben who has to stay at his granny’s every Friday night but he hates it!! She is so boring and all she eats is cabbage. But it turns out she isn’t that boring. She is actually an international jewel thief! Ben finds out and makes a plan with granny to steal the crown jewels. I have never laughed so hard reading a book! i would definitely give this book 5 stars and recommend it to people age 9-14.

on 3 November 2013This book is a very funny novel written by David Williams. I really like when the granny had hidden fake jewels in an empty, old biscuit tin. When the boy opened the tin he was amazed but didn’t tell his cabbage-smelling granny.
I think I would rate this book five stars.

on 1 March 2012Gangsta Granny just made me laugh. Walliams made it entertaining, yet well written and enjoyable. I would recommend for younger readers who would like to laugh! It has a fantastic plot line, portrayed in the silliest way, yet it manages to work and make a brilliant book!

on 2 February 201211year old Ben detests staying at his grandma’s bungalow every Friday night. Whilst his mom and his chubby dad go and watch Strictly Dancing, having a good time, all he has is cabbage soup and pie. Although, strangely, unlike his mom and dad Ben hates dancing and all he really cares about is plumbing. Until one day his granny is not so boring after all…
One night Ben opens up a biscuit tin to find GEMS! Not any old gems but diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds! That night James had lots of things running through his mind such as why does she have them? when did she get them? and most importantly how did she get them?
What I really like about the book is mainly the illustrations which are very detailed but the story line is great.I like the way it makes you laugh but makes you think about the characters as well.
The age group is 9+ and both boys and girls. It would be brilliant for something like a book club or a club like that.
Charlotte, age 9
