Product description
Read Jan’s true story of bombs, rations, country life and escape from the Blitz. A look at the war from a kid’s point of view, full of amazing photos. Being young can be tough, right? Yucky school dinners. Homework. Sharing the remote control. But spare a thought for poor British kids in World War II, who had things even worse. If they weren’t flattened by bombs, they were packed off to a strange new life in the country. A new family. Food rations. Gas mask drills. The Blackout. And homework. Wish you were there? See what it was really like.

I thought this book was awesome. I didn't understand what it was like for children in wars before, how dangerous with bombs falling on houses. I think the doodlebugs sound very scary. It would be scary too and sad for children to be sent away from their parents and not know where they were going or what families they would be with. Melody aged 9.

on 27 April 2015I really want to read this book, i read the description and it looks great, although i might have to put it down if it gets to sad. Reading this would probaly put my whole life in perspective, that my childhood is not nearly so bad. I am reading wonder at the moment, the events of a boy an unfortunate facial deformaty. I have also read pig heart boy in English lessons, and this is also about a boy with a lethal desicion for wether he wants a heart transplant-from a pig. These are two great books, but they are not on this website. I love sad but different books like this that really make you think. 📚

An outstanding read
Review of Evacuee: A Real-Life World War II Story written by Jan Pollard and published by Scholastic Children’s Books
This new narrative is an outstanding, accessible and most readable account of what it was like to be a child evacuated from wartime London under severe aerial bombing conditions. It has been carefully drafted by a master story-teller who carefully places the reader of any age right at the heart of what was happening in a once-in-a-lifetime context. Someone who was literally there recounts the experiences in a thoroughly engaging manner. This well-published author generously shares her deeply recalled personal reflections with others.
